Write With Friends! A writer doesn't have to muse alone in her room ALL the time. Grab your friends and get ready for some craaaaazy creative fun!

![][8514]**Stuff You Need:** * 4 people, minimum * 1 sheet of paper per person * 1 pen or pencil per person * 1 photograph (preferably cut from a magazine or a photo that other participants have not seen before) * Creativity and SILLINESS! **Directions:** Sit in a circle. Make sure that everyone has a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. 1) Pass the photograph around the circle so that everyone sees it. An ad from a magazine or candid shots of celebrities doing silly things usually works best. 2) Once everyone has seen the photograph, place it in the middle of the circle. 3) Allow five minutes for each person to write three sentences that begin a story behind the photograph. 4) After five minutes, tell each girl to pass her paper to the girl on her left. 5) Continue the story that the person on your right has begun. Don’t write more than three sentences in one sitting. 6) Pass the sheets around and continue each story until you have your original story back in your hands. 7) Read all the zany stories aloud! *For even sillier stories, let everyone’s paper go around the circle two (or more) times before you write an ending!* [8514]: /content_images/0000/8514/articles_writing_friends_thumb.jpg 1 1 61646 4 1 Show Edit Destroy

Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of being and ideal grace. I love thee to the level of every day's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for right. I love thee purely, as they turn from praise. I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. *Elizabeth Barrett Browning lived in England during the early 1800s. She was one of the most respected female writers of that century.* 0 1 7 4 1 Show Edit Destroy

Ask Jill: Growing Up ![][9174]Complicated questions about growing up? [9174]: /content_images/0000/9174/JZRutledge_thumb.jpg ![][9174]Teen psychotherapist Jill Zimmerman Rutledge responds to what’s on YOUR mind. [Friend Jill on Club BSG!](http://beta.beaconstreetgirls.com/friendship/create?login=Jill+Zimmerman+Rutledge) **1) My mom and my doctor keep talking about how my body is going to change. What if I don’t want it to?** **Jill:** It's normal for your body to change as you approach puberty. This can be an exciting time—after all, menstruation and your new shape mean that you're growing up! But this can also be a confusing time. School may be harder and friendships may be a lot more complicated—you may long for the days when you were little, your body was predictable, and life was simple! It's perfectly normal to have mixed feelings about your changing body and your changing life. It may help to talk to a friend or a trusted adult about your feelings. And, instead of fighting them or worrying about them, try to embrace the upcoming changes in your body as being natural and beautiful. **2) I’m developing way faster than my friends, and I feel super embarrassed about it. How should I deal?** **Jill:** It can be really hard to develop on a faster track than your friends. You may feel self-conscious about your body. At the same time, if you are one of the last to develop, you may also be self-conscious. You may wonder if you'll ever look like a woman! It's important to remember that just because we're different doesn't mean that we're inferior. If someone teases you because your body is more developed or less developed than everyone else, try not to let their rude comments get under your skin. Talk to someone about the situation so you can get some help putting your feelings into perspective. Whether you develop early or late is often determined by your genes. Remember—everyone catches up sooner or later. **3) All of a sudden, my clothes feel either too small or too tight. Does this mean I need to go on a diet?** **Jill:** It's absolutely necessary for girls to gain weight as they approach puberty. Our bodies need the weight to produce estrogen, an important hormone for women. So, it's perfectly normal for clothes to become too small or too tight a couple of years before menstruation. In fact, if girls don't gain weight around this time, it could lead to physical problems later. If your clothes are becoming too small, give them to your little sister or donate them to charity—and ask your mom if you can buy some new clothes that fit well and are flattering. Try to find clothes that are comfortable and accentuate your positive points. We all have them! If you are concerned that you are gaining too much weight, your doctor can tell you whether or not the weight gain is more than you need. She can also give you suggestions about how to lose weight safely. [9174]: /content_images/0000/9174/JZRutledge_thumb.jpg 1 7 89572 13 1 Show Edit Destroy

[8479]: /content_images/0000/8479/articles_arts_pencils_thumb.jpg ![][8479]**Stuff You Need:** Glitter, Glue, Magazines, Markers, Mementos, Pencils, Pens, Scissors, Scrapbook, Stickers, Paper, Photos, Tape **Directions:** **1. Choose a scrapbook.** Scrapbooks are sold at pharmacies, art stores, and even office supplies stores. It's important to choose a sturdy-looking book that won’t fall apart quickly. You want to have this forever! You can also build your own book from scratch. Use homemade paper for an artistic touch, or buy strong paper (NOT construction paper) from a store. To bind the pages together, three-hole-punch them evenly and either place them in a three-hole-binder or tie them between two strong pieces of cardboard with yarn, string, or ribbon. **2. Gather pictures and mementos.** Search your stuff for photos, movie stubs, old Red Sox tickets, business cards from favorite stores, recipes, and anything else that reminds you of cherished times or adventures you and your friends have shared! **3. Create scrapbook pages.** Arrange your items and photos on a page, then use glue or tape to secure them in place. Don’t forget to write a caption beneath each thing that explains what makes it special. **4. Cover with care and add fabulous flare!** Find a picture of you and your buds together, blow it up, and paste it on the cover. Or collage your favorite mementos on the front and back cover. You can preserve them with Mod Podge or a similar clear-drying adhesive that will save and add glaze to your precious pictures. Here are some great ideas for scrapbook pages that you can make with your friends! **1. Favorites.** Describe everything "favorite" about your posse. For example, favorite teams, restaurants, places to hang out, songs, things to do, memories … and anything else you can think of. **2. Express Yourself.** You and all of your friends each get an individual page to decorate with personal photos or little knick-knacks that illustrate who you are. Think about your hobbies, places you have been, pets, family, and colors that speak to your soul. You add something completely unique to your group of friends … now's your chance to show what that is and preserve it forever! **3. How We Met.** Every group of friends has a how-we-met story. Think about the BSG! Charlotte’s tablecloth-in-the-pants fiasco was legendary. Dedicate one page to how you found each other and add a few mementos as the icing on the cake. **4. Special Events.** Do you remember that crazy Halloween party? You know—when so-and-so dressed up like Jabba the Hutt? Put your heads together and recall the exciting events you attended and the funny things that happened there. **5. The Kitchen Sink.** There are no rules for the perfect scrapbook. Add whatever you want. Get creative. Remember, what makes your friends extraordinary is that there are no other girls in the world exactly like you … and your scrapbook should show it! With your arms at your sides, turn your head slowly from side to side, then up and down. As you take a deep breath in, slowly raise your arms over your head until you can put your hands together. Look up at your hands. Slowly let your breath out as you lower your arms to your sides and look straight ahead. **Plank Pose**: Stand up tall. Slowly bend forward from the waist with your hands sliding down the front of your legs until your hands touch the floor. (You can bend your knees if you need to.) Using your hands to keep your balance, step your right foot back and then your left foot until you are in a position that looks like you’re about to do a push up. This is the Plank Pose. Make sure to keep your body in a straight line from the top of your head to your feet, like a plank of wood. **Downward Dog**: From Plank Pose, push on your hands to shift your weight backwards and point your tailbone up toward the ceiling. Keep your arms and legs straight so your body forms a triangle with the ground. This is the Downward Dog. In this pose, remember to relax your neck and let your head hang down. Try to pull your chest toward your thighs as you gently stretch your heels closer to the floor. **Child’s Pose**: From Downward Dog, gently lower your knees to the ground and sit back on your feet. Slide your hands forward and rest your forehead on the ground. This is Child’s Pose. Take the time you spend in this pose to rest and concentrate on taking deep, regular breaths in and out. (You might have to do this a couple of pieces at a time, depending on the size of your hole punch.) * **Decorate** the two cardboard pieces as the front and back covers of your journal by gluing on old fabric scraps or pictures cut out of magazines. Make sure not to glue over the holes you punched! * When the covers are dry, **stack** the paper in between the two covers so the holes line up. Thread a 10 inch piece of ribbon through each hole and tie it in a bow. Voila! I am always focused on my routines and trying to perform them to my best capabilities. **Club BSG: After you finish a competition, are you friendly with the other competitors?** Nastia: When we are competing we are just like any other athlete. We are very competitive because we want to win. But we don’t let it go too far. We all want the best for each other and are still friendly on the floor. The competitiveness stays on the floor. As soon as we walk out of the gym we hardly ever talk about gymnastics. Keep a positive attitude and smile! Batter Up! ![club_icon_baseball.jpg][6841]Women playing professional baseball? It happened waaaay back in 1943! [6841]: /content_images/0000/6841/club_icon_baseball.jpg ![][1165]Did you know that women once had their own professional baseball league? During World War II, while many players in the all-male Major League served in the armed forces, a group of amazing female players stepped up to fill the baseball void. Even though the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League lasted only twelve years, it changed baseball history! Because many of the players in the League were great softball players, the League decided to combine the rules of baseball and softball. The players were allowed to lead off and steal bases, just like in baseball, but they pitched underhand with a 12-inch ball, like in softball. The organizers of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League thought people wouldn’t attend the games if their players didn’t look their best. Each player was required to attend charm school and was given a makeup kit. Even their uniforms were girly – they included skirts! The League turned out to be a huge success due to the hard work and incredible talents of the players. It lasted for many years after World War II, ending with a final season in 1954. You go, girls! History of Lacrosse Where did the name "lacrosse" come from? Find out here! Did you know that Lacrosse was a way for Native Americans to practice for battles? The Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole, Yuchi and others tribes invented this game. Here’s a short history on the game we all know called Lacrosse: The Native Americans who played this sport used it to claim land and solve disputes. It was originally called “baggataway.” The name Lacrosse was originated by early French settlers who used a common term for a game played with a curved stick and a ball (Crosse). Some people also say that they named it this because it represented a bishop’s crosier, those are the staffs that high ranking catholic people use to show their status. By the middle of the nineteenth century Lacrosse died out in America, but became popular with a tribe in Canada where they added rules to the game. Now it was less of a practice for battle, but a game! The Native Americans were very violent in this game, so when it was brought over to Canada, they refined it and put rules and make all the players wear helmets and safety pads so no one would get hurt. In 1865, the game officially became a sport! There was a lacrosse club that was formed that set rules and safety precautions for the game. 0 7 21 1 Show Edit Destroy

Avoid the Seven Book Clubs Problems 1. If everyone talks at once… • Use a talking stick -- everyone has speaking rights, but only one at a time! • Assign one person as Discussion Director to call on people. • Invent a group signal for silence -- pull on your ears or cover your mouths when it gets too loud! A signal can help remind the group to settle down. • Make "Talking Bucks." Each person gets 5 or 6 at the beginning of the discussion. Each time someone speaks, she spends a "buck" by putting down a card. Once they are gone, she can't speak again until everyone else has used up their bucks. • Ask an adult to join or observe your group and help you solve the chattiness problem. 2. If one girl is bossy and always tries to lead… • Try the suggestions under problem #1. • Assign one or two girls to talk to the girl privately after the meeting and let her know how others feel about her actions. She may not realize what she's doing! 3. If you can’t agree on a meeting location/time… • You may want to vary your meeting times and locations so everyone can make it to at least some of your meetings. 4. If someone keeps missing meetings… • Consider adjusting the meeting time or varying meeting times to accommodate busy schedules. • Have someone record what you do in a meeting to share with girls who miss occasional meetings. • Talk to the person who's missing meetings. She may need help in setting priorities if she's involved in lots of other things, too. 5. If an adult tries to take over… • She may be just trying to help. Be as independent as you can and let her see how good you are at organizing and running your meetings on your own. • She may not realize that's what she's doing. Tell her in a nice way how the group is feeling about her involvement. • Talk to other adults (teachers, moms, dads) about your problem. Ask them for advice and ideas. 6. If the group already has 12 members and others want to join… • Help them start their own group! It's difficult to have a successful group with more than 12 people. • Build a cluster of book groups in your school or your town. • Get together with other book clubs for special events…holiday parties, community projects, even trips! 7. If someone didn’t finish the reading… • Refer to your group's rules. This is something you should consider ahead of time. Your group may decide that it's okay to come once or twice without finishing the reading. Or your group may want to be very strict and ask girls who don't finish not to attend meetings. It's important that you decide as a group and follow your own rules. 0 8 5 1 Show Edit Destroy

Start Your Own Book Club ![books.jpg][3129]**Invite your friends** A book club is a great way to make new friends! [3129]:/content_images/0000/3129/books_small.jpg **Invite your friends** Some clubs are fun with just BFFs, but a book club is a great way to make new friends! Book clubs are all about discussing your opinions about the book you choose, so to have different people with different opinions makes it more interesting—and fun! Ten to 12 people is a good number to have in your club—that way, you can still have a good meeting even if two or three people can't make it. **Find a place to meet** Ask your parents if you can host the club in your house. Or, you can take turns so that each member of the group has a chance to host a meeting at her house. Or, check out your local library. Many libraries have rooms that can be used by book clubs if they sign up ahead of time. Talk to your local librarian to see what is available. **Decide when to meet** Some book clubs only meet once a month if they only want to get together once everyone has finished reading a book. Others want to have the experience of reading a book together and discussing only a few chapters at a time, so they meet more often. Once your group has decided how often to meet, choose a time that works for everyone. Evenings, weekends, after school—it isn't easy to work around everyone's busy schedules! **Make club rules** It's a good idea to spend time at your first meeting planning and organizing your club. Agree when and where to meet, and then talk about how the meetings should be run. 1 8 61646 5 1 Show Edit Destroy

We All Love Lucy! Lucille Ball is more than just an actress on an old black-and-white TV show! “Lucy, you got some ‘splaining to do!” That’s a quote from one of the most famous TV shows of all time: 1950s sensation I Love Lucy, starring Lucille Ball as the title character. On TV, Lucy played a housewife who was constantly getting herself into trouble. Her character was silly and ditzy, and she often needed the help of her husband and friends to figure everything out. But in real life, the actress Lucille Ball was the opposite of silly and ditzy. An amazingly talented actress, she broke into the entertainment biz as a teenager and appeared in everything from dramas to comedies to romances to musicals. In fact, by 1940, she had already appeared in over 40 movies! Her biggest on-screen success came in the 1950s, when she starred in the TV show I Love Lucy. Lucy’s talents weren’t only artistic, though. She was also a successful businesswoman during a time when there were not many powerful women in business. In 1950, she co-founded a production company called Desilu along with her husband, and soon became president of that company. At that time, she was the only female leader of a profitable production company in Hollywood. And a few years later, she even started her own company. Lucille Ball’s story is totally inspiring because she was able to use her talent and intelligence to become one of Hollywood’s most famous stars AND one of its most successful business leaders. We all love Lucy! 0 7 1 Show Edit Destroy

Grace Kelly Rocks! ![Grace Kelly][8599]Grace Kelly is a teen jazz music sensation. Find out how she got to be one of the BEST!

[8599]: /content_images/0000/8599/Grace_Kelly_thumb.jpg ![Grace Kelly][8604]**Club BSG: Hey Grace! Do you feel like you found the saxophone or that the saxophone found YOU?** **Grace Kelly:** Well, I think that the saxophone found me. When I first picked it up, I got a nice sound right away. I was very lucky to find an instrument that I really fell in love with. **Club BSG: Cool! We heard that you got to play at the Grammy Awards with the best high school musicians in the country—what was that like?** **Grace:** It was really fun. We got to perform in front of important producers and artists. And all the other high school students were just incredible. The playing level was great. **Club BSG: Wow! Did you see any celebrities?** **Grace:** We did! We saw Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Alicia Keys, and we got to see the actual Grammy Awards, too, which was pretty cool. **Club BSG: Tell us about your CD, *Gracefullee*, and the new album, *Mood Changes*, coming out this summer!** **Grace:** My first CD, *Gracefullee*, was made with jazz legends. Lee Konitz, my mentor, is featured on the CD. Everything was one take, so it’s a very live CD. My other CD coming out in the summer is called *Mood Changes*. It has a lot of my compositions and arrangements and lots of different instruments and special guests. **Club BSG: Some people call you a prodigy in music. Is that totally awkward for you?** **Grace:** Yeah, it makes me feel a little awkward. I just think that I’ve been really lucky to find something I love to do, and I’m getting a lot of support doing it. **Club BSG: Your heritage is Korean—just like Avery! Do you feel a connection to your Korean roots, and does it have any affect on your music?** **Grace:** I feel even more connected to my Korean roots because I recently did a little tour in Korea, which was my first time there. Recently, I’ve been looking into taking international music and melding it into my music. **Club BSG: That sounds interesting! After you are finished school, what do you imagine yourself doing?** **Grace:** I hope that I would get to play more festivals and work with more famous jazz musicians and pop musicians. I hope to spread my music to the largest amount of people and have them touched. I think that’s what music’s really for—to help heal people and put across messages. **Club BSG: Even outstanding players like you need music lessons—what is your training like?** **Grace:** It’s pretty busy. I have saxophone lessons with three different teachers. I have voice lessons with three different teachers. I have composition lessons, arranging lessons, piano lessons, music theory, ear training, history of Western music, and that’s about it. On Saturday, I go the New England Conservatory Prep School from ten to five and just do all kinds of ensembles and lessons and stuff like that. **Club BSG: What would you say is one common misconception about jazz music?** **Grace:** I think that one common misconception is that jazz music is boring. I mean, I’m not going to say that it’s not true. There are some jazz players who play music that’s really hard to relate to. But, when I play my music, I really love to have it connect to people, and I wouldn’t call it boring at all. **Club BSG: Many jazz musicians are older men—and here you are, a young woman! How do you think you’ll change the face of jazz music?** **Grace:** I do hope that my music brings in people of
